Corrective Exercise

CHEK Assessment

Before the advent of the seated workplace, satellite television, and all of the other modern conveniences in which we indulge today, the human form was ideally aligned to handle the challenges it faced on a daily basis. But lack of proper movement, poor posture, and their resulting dysfunctions have left our bodies out of balance and inundated with a host of aches and pains. Many people today will never experience what waking up in a body anxious to take on the world feels like.

Corrective exercise is perfect for the person wishing to:

  • eliminate current orthopedic dysfunction
    • back pain
    • hip pain
    • knee pain
    • shoulder pain
  • resolve chronic symptoms of overuse
    • shin splints
    • runner’s knee
    • swimmer’s shoulder
    • iliotibial band syndrome
  • correct faulty posture
  • improve sports performance
  • safely return to optimal conditioning following an injury

The Corrective Holistic Exercise Kinesiology (CHEK) assessment usually takes 1-2 hours. The Nutrition and Lifestyle Assessment is strongly recommended for prospective clients wishing to complete the CHEK assessment as these lifestyle concerns inevitably contribute to the success or failure of any prescribed training program.

Corrective Exercise Program

Once the CHEK assessment is completed, a detailed exercise program specific to the client’s current needs and training status is developed. Exercise is powerful medicine. Yet one man’s medicine is another man’s poison! So including the proper exercises and stretches while, even more importantly, avoiding the ones a client doesn’t need is essential to the success of any workout program. The wrong prescription of exercises is exactly why many people leave the gym frustrated and making a beeline for their neighborhood orthopedic clinic.

A corrective exercise program addresses:

  • posture
  • core function
  • muscle length/tension relationships
  • joint range of motion
  • movement skills
  • workplace and home ergonomics/duties

Over the course of this session, Andrew teaches the program to the client. The client is later encouraged (but not required) to take Andrew through the workout in an effort to demonstrate the proficiency necessary to perform the program correctly while exercising on his/her own. To facilitate the assimilation of the movements and concepts he's teaching, Andrew then emails the client the workout(s) along with video demonstrations of all prescribed exercises and stretches.  This is an invaluable resource for those whom Andrew cannot work with regularly due to proximity, scheduling, or financial constraints. In addition, recommendations for improving workplace and home ergonomics, habitual movement and postural patterns, as well as referrals to the appropriate health care providers when necessary (i.e. massage therapists, A.R.T. practitioners, etc.) are provided so that “the dragon is surrounded.”
